A global environmental, health, safety and engineering services group has taken over three more specialist firms.

RSK acquired CJ Associates and Up and Under Group, and merged with RSKW.

This comes less than a month after the buy-outs of Manchester-based acoustics, noise and vibration consultancy Cole Jarman and Tyne and Wear-based site investigations consultancy Ian Farmer Associates.

The deal has been funded using a £140m package backed by Permira Debt Managers.

It expands Cheshire-headquartered RSK’s footprint to make it one of the largest environmental consultancies in the UK with almost 2,100 staff worldwide.

Bristol-based CJ Associates, formed in 1974, operates the latest soil sampling, equipment and techniques available to recover the best quality of samples.

A top-quality drilling business, with a super-fleet of rigs and equipment, it provides services to a range of clients including Arup, Balfour Beatty and Wessex Water.

Up and Under Group, based in Crewe, was established in 1987 and provides inspections and surveys and repair and maintenance services to a broad range of clients.

The group undertakes works on structures, ranging from major national landmarks to minor roads, including highway bridges over the Thames in Central London and the inspection and investigation of the Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank. In addition to using conventional access techniques, Up and Under Group also provides services in rope access and confined spaces.

RSKW provides management and technical consultancy solutions to the utilities, energy, transport and industrial sectors.

All three businesses will continue to operate under their existing brands and current management: Roger Adams (CJ Associates); Ruth Allen and Andrew Gunning (RSKW); and Andy Fewtrell and Simon Enderby (Up and Under Group).

Dr Alan Ryder, chief executive of RSK Group, said: “I am delighted that these three leading companies are joining forces with RSK.

“It means RSK continues to increase its footprint as one of the biggest environmental consultancies in the UK. It also adds to RSK’s current capabilities and will provide additional layers of skills to the organisation to the benefit of all our clients.”

Roger Adams, managing director, CJ Associates said: “Becoming part of RSK provides excellent opportunities for CJ Associates and RSK alike. Our services and company ethos are well-aligned and we look forward to seeing what the future holds.”

Simon Enderby

Simon Enderby, managing director, Up and Under Group said: “Up and Under is excited to be part of RSK. The combined skills, contacts and technical knowledge will allow for further growth and diversity, enabling us to provide a valuable, solutions-based service to our customers. The international outreach of the group will not only create opportunities for the business and employees, but will also allow the business to showcase its skills to a wider international market.”

Ruth Allen, RSKW partner, said: “RSKW is delighted to be part of RSK. RSK’s range of sector footprints along with its extensive international profile means that we can extend penetration and performance in our traditional markets and investigate new sectors and regions as well as being able to look forward to exciting collaborations with existing RSK companies. This will provide benefits to our clients and staff alike.”
