In previous years Amazon has managed to keep its new hardware tightly under wraps until the official announcement, but this year there have been several leaks including on its own website.

As spotted by Pocket Lint, among the new Alexa-enabled lineup is a wireless subwoofer called the Echo Sub. It is expected to be announced soon alongside the next-generation Echo Dot.

The page has been hastily removed but it gave us a glimpse of what Echo fans have wanted for a long time: better sound quality. Rivals have achieved this without resorting to a separate subwoofer, but are larger and more expensive. For example, the Google Home Max sounds great, but costs £399 and takes up more desk or shelf space than an Echo.

Amazon Echo Sub release date

According to Pocket Lint, the Sub will go on sale 11 October. Given that Amazon is gearing up to make the official announcement shortly, this seems a believable date.

If previous Amazon launches are anything to go by, the Sub will be available to pre-order the moment it (re)appears on the website.

Amazon Echo Sub price

The listing, which was inadvertently made public before being pulled, stated a price of £75.00. That is potentially incorrect, a theory bolstered by the fact that a separate Smart Plug listing quoted a price of £95.00, which is clearly wrong.

No Echo product is priced to a round figure – they cost £49.99, £89.99, £119.99 and so on – so we suspect this will change when the listing goes live officially.

If the price is right, then this looks like a good-value price for a smart, wireless subwoofer.

Amazon Echo Sub specs

The Sub offers 100W of room-shaking bass from a down-firing 6in woofer. It must be paired with an Echo or Echo Plus, a simple process that’s done wirelessly via the Alexa app. Sadly, it doesn’t look like it will work with the Echo Dot, Spot or Show.

The listing also reveals that a new feature is coming: stereo pairs. Apple recently introduced this for the HomePod and now Echo owners will be able to do the same. Adding an Echo Sub means you have a 2.1 setup that could turn out to be very good value.

The images show a black model with a fabric cover, but it’s not yet known if it will be sold in other colours to match your Echo.
