Apple’s App Store Bans On-Device Cryptocurrency Mining | News & Opinion

Apple has decided to ban cryptocurrency mining software from the company’s app store. Last week, it updated the store’s review guidelines with an explicit ban against any software that’ll mine cryptocurrencies over the device. The only exception is for “cloud-based mining,” in which the virtual currencies are remotely generated off the Apple product. Apple introduced the ban after a developer released a Mac program called Calendar 2 on the app store, which contained an optional cryptocurrency mining function. Activating it…

iOS 12 vs iOS 11: Should you update your iPhone or iPad?

Apple unveiled four big operating system updates at WWDC on 4 June 2018, and the biggest of all was iOS 12, the new OS for iPhone and iPad. iOS 12 will be released to the public in September, and beta testing versions will be available sooner than that. But is it any good, and – given how difficult it will be to go back to iOS 11 – should iPhone and iPad owners make the upgrade? In this article we…

Private Internet Access VPN (for iPhone) Review & Rating

To keep yourself secure online, even on your iPhone, you need a virtual private network, or VPN. Private Internet Access VPN offers a robust VPN service at an affordable price. The company puts more emphasis on technology and performance than interface design, however, and this is especially noticeable on the iPhone, where consumer expectations for design are at their highest. Private Internet Access delivers excellent security, but its performance wasn’t great out of the box in our testing. If you’re…

Best insurance for iPhone X

The iPhone X is undoubtedly the best mobile device that Apple has ever created, but that quality comes at a high price. The sad truth is that £1,000 of glass, metal and electronic components can soon be reduced to a worthless pile of scrap if it takes a harsh fall or goes for a ride in a washing machine. That’s why it’s essential that you have insurance. We’ve put together a guide to what you should look for when investing…

FIFA 19 release date, price, platforms, new features

No sooner has a FIFA game landed that we are thinking about the next one. What could be better? Who will be on the cover? Will we finally get full Serie A teams? FIFA 18 was a decent update, but FIFA 17 was the most recent clear evolution of the series with the introduction of the Frostbite game engine and The Journey single player mode. If 19 is to be an incremental upgrade, then what else can EA bring to…

BlackBerry Key2 review: Hands-on – Tech Advisor

If you know about the BlackBerry KeyOne, you’ll already know the basics of the BlackBerry Key2. At first glance the phones are very similar, but there are some pleasing additions to the Key2 that make it a better phone. It has thinner bezels, an extra camera, a much better keyboard and even – for the first time in a decade – a new key on that famous keyboard. We had hands-on time with the BlackBerry Key2 before its launch. Here…

Golden Frog VyprVPN (for iPhone) Review & Rating

A virtual private network, or VPN, protects your identity online and safeguards your data when you browse the web on shared networks. Your antivirus may protect your computer against attack by ransomware or other malware, but a VPN offers protection where your computer touches the internet. Golden Frog VyprVPN (for iPhone) has the robust offering of servers and excellent security features we expect in a VPN service, but it offers fewer licenses than competitors in this crowded space. VyprVPN won’t…

How to make group FaceTime video calls with up to 32 people

There are plenty of interesting new features in the iOS 12 update unveiled at WWDC 2018 – the ability to create your own custom Memoji, for example – but the headline feature has to be group FaceTime. It’s something that’s been demanded almost as long as FaceTime has existed: the ability to hold a video chat with more than one other device. And it doesn’t seem like much to ask, given that rival services such as Google Hangouts and Skype…

Apple Now Allows Free Trials for iOS Apps | News & Opinion

Non-subscription apps can now offer a free time-based trial period before payment is required. Developers launching apps on Apple’s App Store obviously want to make money, but the difficult question is always how to make money. There’s so many free apps available it’s difficult to sell users premium content which demands payment upfront. There are ways around that with in-app purchases (IAP), but Apple has now introduced a much cleaner try-before-you-buy option. As GamesIndustry.biz reports, subscription-based apps have been able…

IPVanish VPN (for iPhone) Review & Rating

If you’ve ever used an unsecured Wi-Fi network, you have unwittingly risked passing your personal information to crooks. Network security is a tricky thing, even on an iPhone, but using a virtual private network, or VPN, like IPVanish VPN goes a long way toward making your web surfing safer and more secure. IPVanish allows P2P and BitTorrent traffic on all its servers, though this feature is more important on desktops than on mobile devices. However, some of its advanced features…

How to use Apple Pay Cash in the UK

Apple Pay may have reached critical mass now: our experiences (in and around London, it’s true) suggest that more shops now accept it than don’t, while even Barclays joined the scheme eventually. But at WWDC 2017 last summer, Apple announced a significant expansion of the service’s scope: you can now use it to make payments between people, rather than to businesses. No longer will your feckless mate be able to claim that he left his wallet at home: he can…
